Good comments treasured. I can see why you would be tempted to put those passage on the back burner, since you had experienced them being abused. Of course, it is also "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" as you have come to realize.

Rom 12:9b
Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
NIV

You ended with John 6:68 - Ironicaly another verse that the Watchtower abuses, as they teach that the organization is the only one with the truth, if not the Watchtower, to whom else can you go.

Fortunetly, truth does not come from an organization, it comes from God. You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Him.

Truth can be painful, it is not always what we want to here. Cultivating a love for truth, takes a lot of sting out of it. Even the truth that nothing in this world, is worth having if it gets between you and God.

These passages are some that I had to put on the "back burner" for some time.(as were many other scriptures that were memorized).... These scriptures are used a lot by Jehovah's witnesses. Their way of getting you to turn yourself over to the "organization"...severing ties with your biological family if they don't want to listen to the "truth". Actually a way of isolating you and making one pliable to their teachings.
It has taken years now for me to grow in my personal relationship with Christ...Finding out for myself that He is not the first created angel but God Almighty!..God of the universe...God of such love that He died for us... as if each one were the only and most precious being on earth ! (now that's personal) I think that realization came when I was no longer 'obsessed' with my family and friend's walk or their salvation but started focusing on Christ and His love and could honestly feel like the song says "though none go with me, I still will follow, no turning back, no turning back".
Like Peter said " to whom shall we go?...." John 6:68

This is one of Jesus' harder sayings. It is natural to love family, friends, a spouse or fiance profoundly. To be expected to be willing to give them up is not asking something natural of an individual. For us, to lose the pleasures of loving and being loved, is a large sacrifice. Giving up those things, is not just suffering a loss, it is enduring pain, sometimes the pain is so great, that life may not seem worth living. As I said, it is not natural. We are too weak, most of us, to do it. If we can rationally look at what we gain in a real relationship with the Lord, then we realize that to have Him is worth any price we could pay, any price.
However, a rational understanding does nothing to ease the pain or loss. Again, it is not natural. It is not supposed to be. It is super-natural. We make a choice to follow our Lord, we make it from the heart, but it is His Spirit in us, that makes it possible to forsake all to follow Him.
The power to do super-natural things - rise above the natural, is not force upon us, it is offered to us, we are enabled to live as we never could have apart from God in us.
So many of us though, get bogged down by the cares of the world, and miss all the joy we are intended to have. It isn't God's fault, it is ours. The costs of discipleship are high and many. Living a truly super-natural life is rarely done. All of us, I suspect, have things that we won't give up. Could be a habit, a small pleasure such as television or dining out at a nice restaurant. Not that we have to give up these things, for God gave us all things richly to enjoy. However, is is about our attitude, our sense of value. Is television worth more than time in fellowship, in service, in prayer, in the His Word? Which is better, to enjoy a steak dinner, or feed a homeless family.
Some Christians follow the practice of Lent. I find the idea to be a good one, except for the fact that it is for 40 days, instead of 365 days. As we approach the season where we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, and we reflect on His sacrifice for us, perhaps we can think of areas to sacrifice for Him, areas that benefit others, showing the love of Jesus, acting in us, through our actions. Just a thought.
